Stepping into the Weird Unknown with Author Dana Louise, Minnesota
On July 16th, 2024, Edge Talk Radio welcomed Minnesota author Dana Louise for an open and unconventional conversation about spiritual awakening, paranormal experiences, feeling different from the people around you, self-acceptance, healing, and learning to embrace the parts of yourself that may not fit neatly into what others consider "normal."
Dana is the author of This Is Going to Sound Weird: An Awakening Memoir, a title that perfectly reflects much of her life story. She shared that unusual experiences have been part of her life since childhood, including encounters she interprets as paranormal, extraterrestrial, spiritual, and multidimensional. Because those experiences felt so different from what people around her talked about, Dana learned early on to compartmentalize them.
She described essentially living as two versions of herself: the person having these deeply unusual experiences and the person who still needed to move through everyday life as a mother, wife, worker, and member of the community. Keeping those worlds separated became a form of safety, but it also created a sense of isolation.
That loneliness became one of the most important themes of the conversation. Dana spoke about knowing that some of her experiences would sound unbelievable to other people and feeling that she couldn't safely talk about them. She compared the secrecy surrounding those experiences to carrying something deeply personal that you believe no one will understand or believe.
The conversation highlighted something that can happen during any profound spiritual awakening: the way a person's understanding of reality can change faster than the relationships around them. Suddenly, beliefs, experiences, or perceptions that feel very real to one person may sound completely foreign to family members, friends, or coworkers. That difference can create loneliness, separation, confusion, and sometimes fear.
Dana also spoke candidly about the emotional impact these experiences have had on her. Some were frightening. Some left her searching for explanations she never received. Others contributed to feelings of trauma and being different from everyone around her. In one story, she described a powerful experience at a spiritual event that left her feeling separated from others and desperate to understand what had happened. Eventually, she had to become more comfortable with the possibility that not every experience would come with an immediate explanation.
That uncertainty is something many people can relate to even if their own awakening looks completely different. Spiritual growth doesn't always arrive as a peaceful meditation or an immediate sense of clarity. It can challenge long-held beliefs, bring deeply buried emotions to the surface, change relationships, or make someone question aspects of themselves and their lives they once took for granted.
Dana's journey eventually led her to what she calls "coming out of the cosmic closet." After years of keeping many experiences private, she began writing them down. What initially felt like something she was preserving for her children and future generations grew into a much larger purpose: creating a space where other people could hear an unusual story and perhaps feel less alone in their own.
Community became an important part of that process. Simply hearing someone else talk openly about experiences that seem strange, inexplicable, or outside the mainstream can give another person permission to begin talking about their own. Dana's willingness to share wasn't about convincing everyone to interpret the world the way she does. It was about opening a conversation.
The interview also explored the importance of allowing people to awaken at their own pace. Dana and Angela discussed how one person's level of spiritual understanding may look completely different from someone else's. Awakening shouldn't become another reason to judge people or feel superior. Instead, there can be value in allowing each person to discover, question, learn, and grow on their own timeline.
Another powerful theme was self-love. Dana shared how negative thoughts, self-criticism, past trauma, and feeling different affected her over the years. She described learning to recognize the difference between those critical internal voices and what she actually knew to be true about herself. Rather than continuing to define herself by fear, judgment, or past experiences, she began working toward accepting and loving herself more fully.
For Dana, that understanding is closely tied to something she repeatedly calls being a "whole holy human." Her message is that people are far more than their fears, wounds, labels, mistakes, or even their unusual spiritual experiences. Learning to understand the full human being — body, mind, emotions, spirit, history, joy, pain, and everything in between — can become an important part of healing.
The conversation wasn't entirely serious. Dana repeatedly returned to joy, playfulness, curiosity, and the importance of not making spiritual growth so heavy that we forget to live. Whether it is spending time outdoors, laughing, being silly, reconnecting with the curiosity of childhood, or simply allowing life to feel interesting again, joy can also be part of awakening.
Ultimately, Dana's story is about becoming more willing to step into the unknown without needing every answer immediately. Some experiences may feel strange. Some may change the way we understand ourselves. Others may challenge relationships or leave us questioning what is real. But greater self-acceptance, community, discernment, and curiosity can help make that unknown feel a little less lonely.
What I Learned From Dana Louise
The unique aspects of spiritual awakening can feel very weird, especially when the people around us don't understand what we're experiencing. That can create loneliness and separation, and some experiences may even bring fear, anxiety, depression, or trauma to the surface. One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of developing a greater understanding and acceptance of your whole holy human — all the different parts of who you are — while remembering that you don't have to have every answer right away.
